Pune, August 3, 2023(PCB) : Doctors at the Medicover Hospital, located in Indrayani Nagar area of Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune have accomplished a successful Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure on an 85-year-old woman who was suffering from severe aortic stenosis. Dr Suraj Patil, Dr Sharath Reddy and their team at Medicover Hospitals gave the woman a new lease of life. This feat is another feather in the cap of Medicover hospital, Being 1st hospital in Pimpri-chinchwad to do so.

The patient was admitted to the hospital with complaints of shortness of breath for the past 4 to 5 months, to the point where she could barely walk even a few steps. After a thorough clinical evaluation and imaging by echocardiography, it was found that the patient was suffering from a critical condition of severe stenosis of the aortic valve. This means that the valve, which acts as the gateway for blood to enter the body after being pumped from the heart’s main chamber, the left ventricle, was significantly narrowed, causing her breathing difficulties. The diagnosis was confirmed through further clinical evaluation, and the medical team proceeded with the necessary treatment to restore the patient’s health said doctors at a press conference today.

On July 24th, the patient underwent aortic valve implantation through the thigh, without opening the chest and within two hours, she was able to get out of bed. She was discharged from the hospital within 3 days marking an impressive recovery.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Suraj Patil, DM cardiologist at Medicover Hospitals, noted that due to the patient’s elderly age, fraility and other health issues, the surgery was considered high-risk and potentially fatal. As a result, the patient was offered the option of a catheter-based valve implantation, known as TAVI. This innovative procedure involves delivering a prosthetic valve to the natural aortic valve’s position and implanting it in place of the damaged aortic valve through a small incision of only 3-4 mm in the thigh. More importantly, this was one of the challenging most case with less favourable anatomy. But our team accepted the challenge head-on and delivered excellent result, the doctors said.

The outstanding skill set and technical expertise of the medical professionals at Medicover Hospital, including Dr Suraj Patil and Dr Sharath Reddy, who has specialized training in this advanced and complex procedure, made it possible to perform the procedure without any complications. Dr Prashant Shinde, Dr Sonam Shinde, Dr Ashish Baviskar were part of the cardiology team with valuable contribution.

Completing the TAVI procedure with no major complications is another proud moment for Medicover Hospitals’ Pune branch, which can confidently assert that they possess the necessary skill set and clinical set-up required for this highly complex, life-changing procedure. The entire cardiac team deserves heartfelt gratitude for their contributions to the patient’s positive outcome. The successful outcome demonstrates the high caliber of medical care that is available at Medicover Hospital, as well as the dedication and expertise of its medical team, the doctors said.
